Why Hazel & Blue

I get the same question all the time: What’s the toughest part about being an endurance athlete? My answer is always: fueling and nutrition. Some days, I train up to 8 hours, which leaves little time (or energy) to be in the kitchen. I want food that’s going to be easy to prepare, tastes incredible, and helps energize and restore my body. These are my go-to recipes and strategies, collected over a 12-year (and counting!) career as a pro triathlete, that satisfy my appetite for uncomplicated, anti-fad, wholesome, delicious food.

My Journey with Food.

Growing up, every night, no matter what, my family gathered around the dinner table to share a good meal and reconnect. I learned the value of not only eating healthy food, but also the ritual of coming together around the table. I also realized that you don’t have to compromise taste to eat healthy—you can have the best of both.

That's not to say the journey has always been smooth. Like most, I've navigated through some dietary pitfalls and cringe-worthy habits (raise your hand if you've fueled a six-hour bike ride with Diet Coke and Pop-Tarts). But all those experiences and learnings shaped my perspective on food. And now I want to share what I've learned with you.

In addition to my own experiments in the the kitchen – some good, some bad– I also turn to a handful of cook books. You can purchase or learn more about my favorites by clicking on the button below.
